How To Transform Your Raspberry Pi into a Smart Home Electricity Meter!

Monday, June 06, 2016

If you have always wanted to check your electric energy consumption at home, you can now do this easily without the need of expensive smart meter reading equipment from your energy supplier. All you need is any Raspberry Pi model and a solution called SmartPi, which is an expansion module that mounts on top of your Raspberry Pi.

With the SmartPi you can essentially turn your Raspberry Pi into an electronic device that measures and records consumption of electric energy via a split-core current transformer sensor that plugs into a 3.5 mm jack for connecting the current terminals and screw terminals for connecting the voltage measurement. The SmartPi has four 3.5 mm jacks so you can have up to four of these split-core current transformers.

Monitoring and recording of data is done online via a web server with web page and a REST interface, which allows you to set parameters to alert you when electricity consumption has increased over your pre-set parameter.
