BlitzWolf BW-P8 74Wh Power Bank 20V 45W USB-C PD Output

Thursday, January 10, 2019

To charge a laptop on the go, you want a power bank like the BlitzWolf BW-P8 with enough battery capacity and capable of outputting enough power to charge the laptop while it's powered onand running at full load, and this is because some power banks can only charge a laptop while it's powered off!
When buying a power bank for your laptop, you first want to determine the power consumption of your laptop and you do this by checking the wattage specification of the AC power supply adapter that comes with your laptop.
Some laptops' power supply adapters only show voltage and amperage but you can easily figure out the wattage by simply multiplying voltage and amperage to find the wattage power consumption (Voltage x Amperage = Wattage).
Take for instance, the Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon and ThinkPad T430 laptops which have a power supply rating of 20V /2.25A and 20V 4.5A respectively. The X1 Carbon's power consumption would be 45W (20V x 2.25A = 45W), while the T430's power consumption would be 90W (20V x 4.5A = 90W).
17cm long, 7.5cm wide and 2.2cm thick and weighs 450 grams
Saying this, some laptops like the Microsoft Surface Book 2 and the HP G2 Core I3 Notebook PC consume even more power because they use what is called "discrete GPU" (or dGPU) which is an add-on graphics card that kicks-in when the laptop is under heavy load during gaming or when 3D rendering and saving in Photoshop.
Even if your laptop isn't a USB-C laptop that charges over USB-C, you can still use the BlitzWolf BW-P8 power bank with a USB-C to DC 2.5mm active converter like the BatPower EM3.
The BlitzWolf BW-P8 uses a 20,000 mAh lithium polymer battery with a 3.7V nominal voltage so the BW-P8 powerbank has a 74Wh (watts-per-hour) rating which is good because some airlines only allow 100Wh power banks. Calculating watts-per-hour (Wh) is actually pretty easy. You simply multiply mAh x voltage and divide the result by 1000 (20,000 x 3.7=74,000/1000=74Wh).
Aside from charging your laptop, the BlitzWolf BW-P8 USB-C port can also fast charge a variety of devices thanks to supporting Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 (5V/3A, 9V/3A, 12V/3A) and Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 (14.5V/3A and 20V/2.25A) which provide variable voltage and amperage.
While the BlitzWolf BW-P8 power bank is capable of fast charging, your devices must also support fast charging which is nice because about 50 percent of the battery gets charged in about 30 minutes. If your devices aren't enabled for fast charging, they will charge at 2A speeds.
the BlitzWolf BW-P8 USB A ports are capable of outputting 2.4A at 5V (3.1A max)
The Power Delivery USB-C port in the BW-P8 powerbank support both PD 3.0 and PD 2.0 specifications and can also fast charge phones that support Power Delivery such as the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, LG G6 and the newer iPhones even though they don't feature a USB-C port (the new 2018 iPad Pro is the only Apple device that currently uses a USB-C port).
All iPhones basically use Apple's proprietary Lightning connection but you can still use the BlitzWolf BW-P8 Power Delivery USB-C port to fast charge your iPhones when using a USB Type-C to Lightning adapter.
The BlitzWolf BW-P8 USB-C port is bidirectional and as long as you use a 30W Power Delivery USB-C wall charger (20V/1.5A) you can fast charge the BlitzWolf BW-P8 20,000 mAh lithium polymer battery in just 3.5 hours with a maximum input power of 30W (20V/1.5A) and at different power variables (5V/3A, 9V/2A, 12V/2A, 14.5V/2A).
If you don't have a USB-C PD charger, you can still charge the power bank with a non-PD USB wall charger but fully charging the powerbank takes much longer depending on the rating (8.5 hours via 5V/1A).
While laptops make excellent power banks for charging your devices on the go, the 500mA power output of a computer's USB port is pretty low so charging devices like an iPad would take forever while the Samsung Tab A tablet would not charge at all because it requires at least 2A. Also, you may not carry your laptop with you everywhere which is why a USB-C powerbank like the BlitzWolf BW-P8 makes perfect sense because it can provide at least two extra charges for a 45W laptop which is great if you travel some place where electricity isn't readily available.
