Autonomous ErgoChair 2 Review Desk Chair With Adjustable Neck Support

Saturday, October 03, 2020

It is important to invest in the areas you spend most of your life and, for most of us that will be working and sleeping in bed. If your job involves sitting all day in a chair, it makes total sense getting a comfortable chair that will save your posture and back over time. This doesn't necessarily mean getting the most expensive chair on the market or, a gaming chair, which contrary to popular belief isn't necessarily the most comfortable sitting solution!

forward tilt mechanism glides effortlessly like a metal blade skate on ice
The ErgoChair 2 is designed in such a way that the user can manually adjust and tweak the chair. This includes the lever control that slides the seat of the chair forward and backward, which can be easily adjusted so, the sliding mechanism can freely glide the seat back and forth. This lever is attached to the sliding mechanism via a small articulating joint that can be easily re-positioned by removing the retaining screw.
The ErgoChair 2 headrest weighs 742 grams and, it is designed to adjust up and down via notches, just like a headphone headband. The headrest can also tilt back and forth by simply pushing with both hands, which can be done while sitting in the chair too.
The ErgoChair 2 headrest is made of the same materials as the backrest, which are nylon plastic hard backing and breathable coarse mesh. The headrest has a nape designed to fit the natural curve behind the back of the neck.
The headrest can be easily removed and attached to the chair without any tools and it's made of two components: 1) the head support and 2) the adjustable stem, which measures 19cm long, 5.5m wide and 1.5cm thick. Both the head support and stem are joined together via a single allen bolt, which forms part of tilting mechanism. The headrest support has a 24cm circumference and measures 34cm long.
While a desk chair made with a mesh backrest and mesh seat is great in the summer, without any foam padding it's not likely to be as comfortable for long use. The ErgoChair 2 has a good compromise, integrating a mesh backrest and a molded foam padded seat that is covered with hard-wearing polyester fabric.
The weight of the ErgoChair 2 seat is 3.6kg, while the weight of the backrest is 5.7kg. The ErgoChair 2 seat measures 50cm long and 50cm wide so, it has a perfect square design.
The seat offers plenty of room to accommodate large bottoms - even sitting cross-legged - and has a very firm (closed cell) foam padding construction to accommodate heavyweight users (up to 160kg). If you're relatively lightweight, the ErgoChair 2 seat may feel hard at first until it starts softening over time.
The ErgoChair 2 arm rest backing is constructed out of hard nylon plastic and feature a chrome plastic accent and thick firm foam pads made of high density PU foam mold. The dimensions of the arm rests are 26cm long, 9.5cm wide and 3cm high (thick). The arm rest stem is 26cm long, 6.8cm wide and approx. 3cm thick, although the stem has a beveled edge; hence it is thicker at the top and narrower at the bottom.
The ErgoChair 2 arm rest integrates a spring loaded paddle control that makes a loud click when pressed. The height of the arm rest is adjusted in three levels from 26cm (lowest) and 33cm high (maximum) and, you can also slide the arm rests left to right. Total weight of each arm rest is 1.1kg.
In terms of comfort, the ErgoChair 2 arm rest padding is very firm and thick; hence they aren't cushiony and won't feel that comfortable until the padding softens over time (a bit like a brand new firm mattress).
The left and right slide adjustment of the arm rests does not lock into place like the height adjustment. The arm rests are design to freely move with your arm movements, which works well, although some may potentially find this an inconvenience. If you can't wait for the arm rests to soften, you can always buy memory foam pads to put on top.
More chrome accents can be found throughout the chair, along with minimal Autonomous branding found on the backrest y-frame (bubble-like tag) and the seat (fabric tag). The ErgoChair 2 backrest is supported two ways: 1) via the outer y-frame that supports the backrest and 2) via a small lumbar cushion.
The y-frame integrates a tensioning mechanism that is adjusted automatically via a lever that flips up and down. The small lumbar cushion provides extra support to the lower area of the backrest. The ErgoChair 2 lumbar cushion is non-removable and adjusted manually by pushing the cushion up and down along a loud-clicking notched slider. There is approximately 20 adjusting notches, giving you a 10cm range of adjustment.
The lumbar cushion can be lowered and lifted while sitting in the chair up to a maximum height  of 23cm and minimum height of 16cm. The lumbar cushion is attached to a nylon plastic hard back and the cushion itself measures 12cm high, 29cm long and 5cm deep (thick).
The heaviest component in the ErgoChair 2 is the adjustment control mechanism that holds the seat and gas lift cylinder, which weighs 766 grams. The adjustment control mechanism is made of a heavy block of aluminium with a black anodized outer surface and measures 42cm long, 18.5cm wide and 10cm tall.
The adjustment control mechanism integrates five controls, three of which are located on the same arm lever, including a seat height paddle control, a forward tilt paddle control and a revolving crank handle for adjusting the back tilt tension.
This revolving handle rotates clockwise and anti-clockwise, allowing you to increase or decrease the tensioning force required for you to recline on the ErgoChair 2. On some desk chairs, the back tilt tension is controlled via a knob, which is typically located on the base of the chair, requiring you to get off the chair, kneel down and bend under the chair to adjust it. The revolving handle on the ErgoChair 2 is definitely much easier to use and can be easily operated while sitting on the chair, which is something you cannot do with a tilt tension adjustment knob.
The paddle control lever (opposite the revolving handle) activates the back tilt function by simply pushing and holding down the handle while reclining back until you reach your preferred angle. The lever that looks like a long rowing paddle activates the seat tilt function by pulling it out and turning clockwise. The sixth paddle control is an additional back tensioning system, which is built-in to the y-frame of the backrest. All paddle control levers are made of nylon hard plastic.
When assembling the ErgoChair 2 (and really any desk chair) you want to slightly grease or lubricate the inner hole of the chair base and seat base where the gas lift cylinder inserts to prevent sticking. If you don't and seat on the chair for long enough, the gas lift cylinder becomes wedged in that is almost impossible to be removed from these parts without literary using Thor's hammer and whacking the chair like you mean it!
All female threads on the ErgoChair 2 are gold plated, which allows a proper tight screwing. Like most desk chairs, the widest component of the ErgoChair 2 is the chair base, giving the unit a total width of 73cm. From arm rest to arm rest, the ErgoChair 2 measures 67cm wide. The backrest has a width of 48cm, while the distance from the left to right paddle controls is 46cm.
Assembly is straightforward and only requires one person. You get a user manual to guide you through, which you actually want to follow to make sure you use the correct screws for each section. A tall working surface is useful to have too to make fitting the arm rests and backrest easier.
The screws have blue thread locker to prevent undoing. There is no mention of which type/strength of blue thread-locker has been used (i.e. Loctite 222 or Loctite 243) but, being blue thread locker you can easily undo the screws with a screw driver. Red thread locker (Loctite 270), in the other hand, is permanent so, you would need to blow torch it to remove the screw.
The ErgoChair 2 hard plastic chair base weighs 1.9kg and has a 66cm diameter. It holds five hard plastic castor wheels, measuring 6cm tall and weighing 100 grams each. Without the wheels, the chair base has a height of 12cm.
Total height with wheels is 18cm. The inner hold diameter of the chair base is 5cm and designed to accommodate the included 4.3cm diameter gas lift cylinder, which measures 22cm long and it's made of black anodized aluminium. The gas lift comes with a standard retainer clip designed to be removed to access the gas cylinder bearing and replace it. You will know when this bearing needs replacing when the gas lift rod sticks out of the base.
The ErgoChair 2 is not only ergonomic and versatile too because of the myriad of adjusting options. The ErgoChair 2 can also be assembled without the backrest, turning the ErgoChair 2 into a piano chair or stool.
The open frame gives the ErgoChair 2 a distinctive and stylish open air feel compared to traditional desk chairs. The ErgoChair 2 is really nice to look at, although it does collect more dust than regular desk chairs because of the exposed crevices.
Also, like most desk chairs the ErgoChair 2 makes its own quirky sound effects when leaning or positioning yourself on the chair. You can buy the ErgoChair 2 from amazon or Autonomous  and get 7% off when using GADGET008 promo code. Check out the review of the Autonmous A2 smartdesk
