RavPower RP-PB234 Review Magnetic Wireless Power Bank 5000mAh

Not being able to use the phone while charging, it's the biggest disadvantage of wireless charging but not any longer. The RavPower magnetic wireless powerbank solves that problem by integrating a magnet, which keeps the phone securely attached to the phone. This means, you can still hold it while charging and use it at the same time, thanks to the built-in 5000 mAh rechargeable battery. Simply put the phone on top of the powerbank and the magnetic attraction positions the phone precisely on the charger so, you don't have to fiddle around trying to find the sweet spot!



The RavPower charger is an effective 5000mAh power bank with Qi wireless charging capabilities that lets you charge a phone wirelessly with a thin protective case, which is less than 5mm thick. If it's thicker or the protective case has a popsocket, you will have to remove them because they won't be detected by the wireless charger. There are safety features built-in to prevent against overheating, overcharging, overcurrent and short curcuiting.


Yyou cannot wireless charge and wired charge two devices at the same time. That said, you can recharge the RavPower powebank and wirelessly charge a phone at the same time (this only works if the powerbank has 50% charge). 


The RavPower 5000mAh powerbank recharges in 4 hours via 5V/2A (10W). It would have been neat if the RavPower powerbank could be recharged via a wireless charger too. however, it doesn't work that way because the wireless charging coil inside the RavPower powerbank is not designed to accept wireless charging input (it can only outpout wireless and wired charge).


The maximum output charge is 10W (in wired mode) and 7.5W (in wireless mode). There is no 10W support so, if your phone supports 10W fast wireless charging, the RavPower charger will automatically output 7.5W.


Charging time will depend on the size of the specific device but to give you an idea, here's an example using the iPhone X. The iPhone X has a 2,716mAh battery that supports up to 18W (via cable) and 7.5W wirelessly. The iPhone X takes 4 hours to fully recharge wirelessly (via 7.5W) and 2 hours to recharge via cable at 10W. This means, the RavPower charger charges the iPhone X 90 minutes quicker than Apple 5W power brick does, which takes 3 hours 30 minutes.


The RavPower magnetic wireless powerbank capacity is 5000mAh with a 3000mAh rated capacity, which is typical with power banks since all power banks experience "power loss" during the conversion from 3.7V to 5V. During the wireless induction process, there is also a lot of power loss, which means the true capacity of the RavPower magnetic wireless powerbank will be 3000mAh (in wireless mode) and around 3700mAh (in wired mode). You can actually calculate the true capacity of any powerbank by using this formula: (3.7V x Advertised Capacity) / 5V-->3.V x 5000mAh/5V=3700mAh.


There is no formula for calculating the power loss during the wireless induction process but it's around 20% power loss, mostly lost through heat. Wireless charging isn't very efficient for that reason. Wired charging experinces around 7% power loss, which is miniscule compared to the power loss of wireless charging.


Using the mobile application Ampere, you can measure the RavPower powerbank wireless and wired output capabilities. In wireless charging mode, the output ranges between 140mA and 260mA, while the wired charging output ranges between 1080mA and 1250mA. Not suprisingly, wired mode is the fastest way to recharge a device. It delivers the largest mA output compared to wireless, about 5 to 6 times as much, which is a huge difference.


The RavPower magnetic wireless powerbank seen pictured is the RP-PB234 model, which measures 11cm long, 6.5cm wide and 1cm thick and has rounded edges. Aside from being a little thicker, the RavPower powerbank has a similar footprint to a smartphone and weighs a bit less than the average smartphone - just 140 grams.


The RavPower magnetic wireless powerbank is made of matte plastic with a glossy plastic strip along the centre for styling. The matte plastic marks easily with fingerprint smudges. There is a vertical array of four small battery status leds (for wired charging) and a single status led to indicate wireless charging activity.
