Royal Kludge RK84 Limited Edition Keyboard Review RK Yellow Switches

Wednesday, March 15, 2023

Perfect gaming keyboard size for small desk setups - the RK84 Limited Edition keyboard by Royal Kludge! The Royal Kludge RK84 Limited Edition is a wired keyboard with dual wireless connectivity - bluetooth and 2.4Ghz wireless respectively.

The RK84 Limited Edition keyboard integrates a metal top plate with a hot swap PCB board and 5-pin sockets. As standard, the RK84 Limited Edition comes with 5-pin RK yellow switches, which have been pre-lubed from factory. RK yellow switches have a similar feel and "fast type" as RK red switches - they're both linear with the same travel distance - although yellow switches have a slight heavier actuation than the standard RK84 red switches.

The RK84 Limited Edition keyboard bluetooth chip supports multipoint connection for up to 3 devices connected to the keyboard at the same time. Being a TKL keyboard, the RK84 Limited Edition keyboard has no numpad and no physical multimedia keys - only virtual multi media keys - which are accessed via the FN key. The RK84 Limited Edition keyboard supports 12 virtual multi media keys when connected to a Windows computer and 6 virtual keys when connected to a Mac computer.

The RK84 Limited Edition keyboard bottom casing is naturally inclined so, it's comfortable to use without feet risers. If you want to elevate the keyboard though, you can do so via the included magnetic feet risers, which easily attach and detach from the keyboard. The magnetic feet risers have a strong magnetic connection so, they work well; however, they aren't as convenient to use as built-in feet risers, which neatly retract into the keyboard.

Another drawback with magnetic feet risers is that you cannot store them on-board the keyboard so, you typically end up misplacing or losing the feet risers.
The 2.4Ghz wireless dongle that is included with the RK84 Limited Edition keyboard stores neatly and securely (magnetically) on the bottom of the keyboard where you also find two tiny switches (power switch & mode switch), as well as four grippy rubber pads.

The RK84 Limited Edition keyboard has an all-plastic construction but the keyboard is noticeable heavy (802 grams), although in a good way - it has a nice weighty premium feel. Without using the feet risers, the top row of keys measures 4cm high, while the bottom row measures 3cm high. With the magnetic feet, the top row measures 5cm high. Overall dimensions of the keyboard are 31.5cm long x 12.5cm deep. The mid-frame of the keyboard can be detached, which creates a cool floating key design.

Despite its small compact size, the RK84 Limited Edition keyboard packs a lot of functionality, including RGB brigthness control on-board the keyboard. As well as brigthness, you can control the speed of the RGB effects and choose from multiple RGB lighting effects (static, single colors and dynamic) directly from the keyboard without having to use software. That said, you will need to download the software if you want to remap the keys, create macros and save profiles.

As far as battery life, you get the longest battery life in 2.4Ghz wireless mode with RGB OFF - around 15 days - when using the keyboard for 8 hours a day. With RGB ON, the battery life is 4 days. In bluetooth mode, battery life is around 10 days with RGB OFF when using the keyboard 8 hours daily. The charging time of the RK84 Limited Edition Keyboard is 6 hours and, you cna use the keyboard while charging.
