JBL Live 770NC Headphones Review

Friday, February 16, 2024

Strap in, music mavens! Meet the JBL Live 770NC—more than just headphones, they're your VIP pass to an audio roller-coaster. With JBL's Signature Sound, these bad boys promise to turn your playlist into a dance party for your eardrums. True Adaptive Noise Cancelling plays bouncer to distractions, ensuring your music takes the spotlight. So, ready to swap the mundane for a symphony of fun? Let the sonic shenanigans begin!

The Live 770NC rocks a chic and contemporary aesthetic, showcasing four unique color options. Crafted from a combination of materials, including plastic, a ratchet-style headband, a reinforced metal inner band, a metal folding hinge, and concave earcups, this design ensures both style and durability. In a departure from traditional headphones, the Live 770NC skips the yokes, meaning its earcups don't sway up and down conventionally. Instead, they're affixed securely to the headband through a pivot with a hint of play, granting the earcups a touch of flexibility in movement.

The JBL Live 770NC integrates a headband crafted from fabric cloth material, paired with PU leather for the earcups. Embossed with the JBL brand lettering, the top of the headband showcases a tasteful touch. Thanks to an adjustable padded headband, lightweight build, and plush fabric ear pads, these headphones offer comfort for up to one or two hours. However, like any PU leather headphones, extended use may lead to some discomfort with potentially sweaty ears.

The snug fit of the Live 770NC headband, coupled with adequate clamping force, ensures a secure seal around your ears. This not only provides isolation from external noises but also minimizes sound leakage, amplifying the effectiveness of the ANC, blocking out approximately 90% of both low and higher frequencies. The ear pad's inner hole measures 5.5cm in height, 4cm in width, and 2cm in depth, while the outer dimensions are 9cm in height and 7cm in width. Topping off the design, a thin layer of fabric covers the top of the driver for a polished finish.

On board the Live 770NC right earcup, there is a touch panel on front of earcup, one momentary slide switch and five physical plastic clicky buttons for controlling various functions including volume, track skipping, ANC/Ambient Aware/TalkThru, voice assistant, play/pause, and calls (answer/end/mute).

The touch control is highly responsive, requiring only light taps and works via four tap gestures (single tap, double tap, triple tap and long tap). There is also two status LED lights - one for bluetooth (blue LED) and one for ANC/Ambient mode (white LED). The buttons are easy to locate and are responsive and the buttons are slightly loose so the buttons produce a slight rattling noise when shaking the headset.

The audio experience of Live 770NC is excellent, thanks to its effective passive noise isolation and high volume output in both Bluetooth and wireless modes, ensuring faithful audio reproduction. The 40mm drivers, with a relatively low 32-ohm impedance, make it easy to bring your music to life when connected to a smartphone, eliminating the need for an external amplifier.

The JBL Headphones mobile app allows you to customize the stock sound profile using the on-board EQ. This app also provides features such as checking battery status, disabling functions, and accessing the 9 preset sounds and 10-band equalizer for personalized audio. You can also remap the ANC/Ambient button, choosing to enable or disable functions like ANC, Ambient Aware, and Off. However, customization options are limited, and touch controls cannot be modified.

The Live 770NC True Adaptive ANC is a useful feature that turns your sound into a peaceful haven. Four microphones pick up on your surroundings and do their thing to minimize any distracting noises, which is super useful in busy places like a café, train commute or even at home to block out construction work and noisy neighbors!

Besides ANC, the Live 770NC also has a transparency mode known as Ambient Aware and TalkThru. TalkThru is JBL's version of transparency mode, a handy feature turning the ANC microphones into "listening" microphones. This way, you stay connected to the world without taking off your headphones. The cool thing about JBL's transparency mode is that it can smartly adjust to your surroundings, making it perfect for times when you want to enjoy your music while talking to people and staying aware of what's going on around you.

The Live 770NC rocks with a whopping 65 hours of music time (50 hours with BT+ANC on) – way better than the competition in the battery game. It only takes a quick 3 hours to charge from empty, and a speedy 5-minute charge gives you an extra four hours. No more stressing about keeping those headphones charged up all the time. Plus, you can still use the Live 770NC in wired mode when the battery's running low.

The Live 770NC isn't just about rocking your ears with awesome sound and ANC/transparency modes. You get also voice assistant integration (Alexa and Google), call functions, multipoint connectivity and spatial sound - all of which can be disabled through the JBL Headphones mobile app. With spatial sound, you get three listening modes - for movies, music, and gaming. Picking the right one is key to getting the best performance out of spatial sound. And if that's not enough, there's a low latency mode called Video Mode, which keeps the audio and visuals in perfect sync for movies and games.
