Majority Oakington Review DAB+ Radio CD Player

Friday, September 29, 2023

The Majority Oakington Bluetooth Hi-Fi Compact Stereo System is an all-in-one audio powerhouse that combines various playback options into an elegant and compact package. From radio enthusiasts to music aficionados, this device aims to please a broad spectrum of users with its diverse feature set.

The Oakington showcases a timeless and refined design that seamlessly integrates with any room decor. Its veneer wood finish and aluminum front panel exude an enduring charm. However, the glossy finish, while elegant, tends to attract dust and dirt, necessitating regular cleaning. With compact dimensions (40 x 20 x 13 cm), it offers versatility in placement.

The rear features two bass ports, a metal faceplate with a USB-A output port (5W max) for external device charging, AUX-in port, USB-A input port, headphone jack, and power switch. Additionally, a telescopic radio antenna, extendable up to 65cm and retractable to 15cm, adds a traditional touch. The Oakington's dimensions are 40cm long x 12.5cm high x 20.5cm deep, and it weighs 3.6kg. The remote control measures 17cm long x 4.5cm wide x 1.5cm thick.

At the front, there are two metal speaker grilles, eight tactile metal buttons, and an LED screen showcasing program details, time, date, signal strength, frequency, audio type (stereo or mono), and scrolling radio text information. The bottom features four sturdy rubber isolation pads and a removable plastic panel for accessing the electronics. On the unit's top, there's a clickable chrome plastic dial for navigation control.

Equipped with a 30-watt speaker system, the Oakington delivers very powerful sound with plenty of bass and volume even at 10% volume. With 4 audio modes (Bluetooth, AUX, USB, and CD), it accommodates a wide range of music sources. At 10% volume, it provides a balanced sound profile with clear bass, crisp midrange, and present treble.

The Oakington offers support for DAB/DAB+ digital and FM radio, featuring a built-in CD player, a Bluetooth receiver for wireless streaming, an AUX input for external devices, and USB playback (compatible with MP3). However, it's important to note that for Bluetooth audio streaming, the connected device must support A2DP to play music stored on it. The included remote can be used to control the connected Bluetooth device, but the device must support the AVRCP profile. It's crucial to understand that the Oakington acts as a Bluetooth receiver, allowing audio playback only through its built-in speakers from the connected Bluetooth device. Unfortunately, the Oakington lacks Bluetooth transmission capabilities, meaning it cannot send Bluetooth or wired audio from the CD, USB stick, or DAB station to external speakers. Additionally, it does not support headphones with a mic input and is not compatible with Bluetooth headphones.

The onboard buttons provide control for track skipping, EQ adjustment, play/pause, CD ejection, CD repeat/random play, Bluetooth pairing, and listening mode switching (Bluetooth/FM radio/DAB/CD). The included remote grants access to all built-in features of the Majority Oakington, including manual and automatic DAB and FM station scanning. For FM stations with weak reception, you have the option to enable mono audio for improved sound quality. The compatible CD formats include CD-R (for one-time recording), CD-RW (rewritable), and Audio CD, a specific format designed for storing audio tracks exclusively. Audio CDs typically have a maximum capacity of 80 minutes of audio and adhere to the Red Book Audio CD standard.

The included remote control for the Oakington streamlines operation, making it easy to play, pause, skip tracks, adjust volume, and manage other functions effortlessly. Constructed from plastic with tactile rubber buttons, the remote is powered by two AAA batteries. In addition to the physical remote, the unit also incorporates touch controls for added convenience. The presence of a USB charging port is a considerate feature, allowing users to charge their devices while listening to music.

Majority provides robust customer support with a basic 1 year and comprehensive 36-month warranty (registration required). This level of support instills confidence in the product's durability and reliability, making it a solid long-term investment. The Majority Oakington Bluetooth Hi-Fi Compact Stereo System stands as an excellent all-in-one audio solution. With its classic design, impressive audio performance, extensive connectivity options, and solid warranty coverage, it caters to a wide range of users. Whether you're a radio enthusiast, a music lover, or simply seeking a versatile audio hub, the Oakington delivers on multiple fronts, making it a valuable addition to your home audio setup.
