Edifier NeoBuds Pro 2 Earbuds Review vs NeoBuds Pro 1

Friday, November 10, 2023

The Edifier NeoBuds Pro 2 stands as the latest addition to the NeoBuds lineup, succeeding the NeoBuds Pro 1 and NeoBuds S. With notable upgrades while preserving its signature design, the NeoBuds Pro 2 promises an enhanced audio experience.

Boasting a design that seamlessly blends aesthetics with comfort, the NeoBuds Pro 2 features sleek, ergonomic earbuds that effortlessly nestle into the ears. Various ear tip sizes ensure a personalized fit, catering to diverse ear canal sizes. Even during extended wear, the earbuds maintain their comfort, establishing themselves as a reliable option for prolonged usage. Removing the earbuds from the case is a hassle-free experience. Each earbud weighs a mere 6 grams.

While the charging case may not be as lightweight (47 grams) and pocket-friendly as some counterparts, it exudes robustness with a sturdy hinge lid. Upon opening, the case triggers automatic Bluetooth pairing, allowing seamless connection of the earbuds within. Reconnecting the earbuds, however, experiences a slight 2-second delay. The matte plastic case differs from the glossy and matte plastic finish of the earbuds. Notably, the NeoBuds Pro 2 case maintains the same dimensions as the NeoBuds Pro 1 - 6.5cm long x 5.5cm deep x 3cm high.

A standout feature of the NeoBuds Pro 2 is its premium sound quality. The fusion of Knowles balanced armature and 10mm dynamic drivers delivers a wide sound stage with a robust low end, clear midrange, and bright treble. The built-in EQ within the Edifier Connect app allows users to tweak the sound signature. Supporting LHDC, LDAC, and AAC codecs emphasizes the commitment to nuanced audio reproduction.

The Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) technology proves to be a game-changer, excelling in noisy environments. The independent feed-forward noise cancellation channel, coupled with the Knowles balanced armature driver, achieves an impressive -50dB reduction in ambient noise. However, noise suppression during phone calls, while effective in blocking external sounds, can be overly aggressive with loud noises, impacting call quality, especially in outdoor environments.

The NeoBuds Pro 2 introduces spatial audio with real-time head-tracking technology, dynamically adapting audio to head movements. While the three-dimensional soundscape may not rival AirPods' surround head tracking, the low latency mode for gaming and High-Res Audio certification (LHDC 5.0 codec) elevate the audio streaming experience.

The NeoBuds Pro 2 supports high-quality audio streaming up to 24 bit/192 kHz at rates up to 1 Mbps, with higher resolution audio and AAC codec being selling points over the original NeoBuds Pro 1, which supports only LHDC 2.0 codec. Notably, the new NeoBuds Pro 2 lacks Bluetooth multipoint support.

Touch controls and intelligent wearing detection are additional features, customizable through the Edifier mobile app. Double tap and triple tap functions can be remapped, although single tap and long tap gestures are not supported.

Intelligent wearing detection, facilitated by an internal infrared sensor, enhances user interaction with automatic pause-play functionality. The Edifier Connect App provides a range of customization options, from EQ adjustments to LED color selection, enabling users to tailor their experience to personal preferences.

For quick charging, the NeoBuds Pro 2 supports swift charging, with the earbuds taking approximately 1 hour to reach full charge. The charging case, when charged via cable, also takes about 1 hour to reach full capacity. Notably, the case does not support wireless charging or 15W fast Qi charging. Charging the earbuds individually takes approximately 1 hour, catering to users on the move. However, it's crucial to highlight that there's no improvement in battery life; in fact, the NeoBuds Pro 1 boasts a slightly longer battery life.

With ANC turned on, the NeoBuds Pro 2 provides commendable battery life. At 50% volume, users can enjoy around 4 hours of playback from the earbuds, supplemented by an additional 12 hours from the charging case. For users opting out of ANC, the earbuds offer a substantial battery life of around 5.5 hours at 50% volume, complemented by an extra 16.5 hours from the charging case. It's worth noting that the Active Noise Cancellation feature does not operate in mono mode with a single earbud, a consideration for users favoring single-ear listening.

The NeoBuds Pro 2 excels in compatibility, seamlessly connecting with both Android and other Bluetooth-enabled devices. The Google Fast Pair feature expedites the pairing process with Android devices, establishing a connection within seconds. Supporting LHDC 5.0 HD codec ensures a high-fidelity music streaming experience over Bluetooth. The NeoBuds Pro 2 also supports both SBC and AAC audio codecs, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of devices and delivering high-quality audio. However, it falls short in supporting multipoint connectivity, limiting its ability to connect to multiple devices simultaneously.
