Mpow H20 Review Over Ear Headphones Bluetooth 5.0

Thursday, August 08, 2019

Technology is getting better and thanks to that, today you can get tech a lot cheaper than you used to be able to just a couple of years ago.
Bluetooth headphones are not different. And, with so many headphones available on the market there are fantastic deals to be had for good sounding headphones. As long as they sound good and don't break easily, you can't really go wrong. The Mpow H20 sound good, look good and they are very affordable without compromising too much the quality.
The Mpow H20 headband and driver housing is made of flexible plastic that is finished in metallic grey with white chrome plastic accents on the sides.
The inner sides of the Mpow H20 headband is made of matt black TPU plastic, while the underside of the top section of the headband features a rather unique padding construction.
The Mpow H2 headband padding seems to be made of either a single piece of flexible rubber or foam padding covered with silicone rubber.
The Mpow H20 earcups are joined to the headband via a pivot joint, giving the earcups a little flexibility so, they can adjust naturally to your specific head shape.
The earpads are made of comfortable memory foam padding and are covered with artificial leather. There is a large enough opening to envelope the ears, which is nice. The inner earpad has a 1.5cm depth and measures 5.5cm tall by 4cm wide. The outer earpad measures 9.5cm tall and 8cm wide.
The Mpow H20 headband has adequate clamping force so, the earpads don't press aggressively against your ears. You can easily use them for a few hours without needing a break although in hot environments you need more ear breaks. The total weight of the Mpow H20  is 260 grams.
The user controls buttons are all located on the back side of the right earcup. The buttons are all physical clicky buttons you press and include a volume rocker and multi-functional button. There is also a status led indicator (pairing, charging, etc), micro USB charging port and 3.5mm headphone port and microphone pinhole alongside these buttons.
The multifunctional button powers on/off the unit, controls the play/pause, as well as answering and rejecting calls. The volume rocker controls the volume and skipping of tracks.
As far as the audio and sound quality, the Mpow H20 40mm speaker drivers deliver clear sound with plenty of volume sound levels. So loud the volume can be turned up that at max volume you get a lot of sound leaking through the sealed earcups.
Even at moderate 50% volume, there is enough sound leakage for someone next to you to hear what you are listening to. The reason for the sound leakage could be the open-back earcup design with what looks like air vents.
For the price, the Mpow H20 packs a quality sound punch! The Mpow H20 integrates a Qualcomm QCC3024 Bluetooth 5.0 chip, which among other things features a DSP (Digital Signal Processor) for higher audio bit rates. Nowhere is stated that the Mpow H20 support aptX, AAC codecs but the QCC3024 chip supports SBC and AAC audio codec so, if you are using the H20 with an Apple iOS device you get better audio quality since AAC is slightly better than SBC.
Being a multipoint Bluetooth headset, the Mpow H20 can be connected to two Bluetooth devices at the same time. If you happen to receive a phone call while connected to multiple devices, the Mpow H20 automatically switches and connects to the ringing phone, which is convenient.
If headphone microphone is important to you, the Mpow H20 built-in microphone won't disappoint you. Even though it isn't a dual microphone, it features the latest CVC 8.0 noise cancelling version so, the audio is extremely clear. If you have the H20 wired to a phone, the H20 microphone won't work because it only works in bluetooth mode.
There is a green warning note that comes with the H20, reminding the user not to use wall chargers higher than 5V. This means, there is no voltage protection built-in to the headphones to prevent damage to the headphones.
Cannot recall such safety warning on other headphones so, it makes you wonder whether voltage protection isn't a standard feature in budget headphones and some manufacturers omit to warn the user about it. It's nice at least that Mpow provides a clear warning.
The rated 30 hours of battery life can be achieved at 55% volume. When it's time to recharge, the internal 500mAh battery capacity takes 2.5 hours to fully charge via 5V/2A. It takes slightly longer (3 hours) when charging via the USB port of a computer or 5V/1A wall charger.
A male to male 3.5mm auxiliary (aux) cable is included so, you can use it when the internal battery of the Mpow H20 dies. Having an aux port on headphones is always handy because it gives you another alternative to plug the headphones directly to a phone and still be able to listen to audio on the go. That is, of course, if your phone still has a 3.5mm headphone jack because more and more  phone manufacturers are deciding to ditch the headphone jack for their newer top of the range smartphones.
charging cable, which is standard USB to micro USB connection
The included zip canvas pouch is nice although it has no foam padding to protect the headphones from bumps and accidental drops. That said, it is made of canvas fabric material so, it should protect the headphones from scrapes and scuffs when transporting them inside a backpack.
While the earcups don't swivel flat, the Mpow H20 over the ear headphones have the same folding design as the Mpow H5 ANC headphones so, the earcups fold inwards to reduce their footprint and making them easier for transportation.
