HyperX ChargePlay Clutch Mobile Review Qi Charging Phone Controller Grip

Wednesday, July 22, 2020

Chances are if you game a lot on your phone you already own a bluetooth gamepad of some sort! Wireless gamepads are a neat way to improve the mobile gaming experience, although game controllers aren't the only option. Phone controller grips are another clever way to enhance and make the mobile gaming experience on a phone feel as close as possible to a traditional console gamepad.
There are several phone controller grips on the market, one being the HyperX ChargePlay Clutch Mobile, which stands out from the other controller grips by integrating both Qi wirelesses charging and power bank capabilities.
Another issue the HyperX ChargePlay Clutch Mobile solves is the inconvenience of having the charging cable stick out of the charging port from the side of the phone. With the ChargePlay Clutch Mobile, you have the options of wireless charging and wired charging.
Thanks to the charging port on top, the ChargePlay Clutch Mobile effectively routes the charging cable to a more natural front position like a traditional video controller. That said, the ChargePlay Clutch Mobile controller grips also have side openings for inserting a charging cable directly into the phone should you wish to.
The wireless charging capability is already a superb addition but the power bank feature makes the HyperX ChargePlay Clutch Mobile even more desirable over other controller grips. The power bank has battery led indicators and it is specifically designed to fit the ChargePlay Clutch Mobile by snapping onto it securely via a strong magnetic connection.
The HyperX ChargePlay Clutch Mobile power bank also integrates a USB-C charging input, a USB-A output (5V/1.5A) and a wireless charging coil so, you can recharge the power bank lithium-ion battery wirelessly. The power bank has a 3000mAh typical capacity with a 1800mAh rated capacity.
The 1800mAh rated capacity means, you will only be able to get a maximum of 1800mAh from the battery and not the full 3000mAh. This is because wireless power transfer is extremely inefficient, so much so that around 70 % of the power is being transformed into waste heat. You can expect the phone to become fairly warm during long playing sessions.
The ChargePlay Clutch Mobile power bank also supports fast charging via 5V/3A wired input, taking just 2 hours to fully charge. There is no support for wireless fast charging; hence the ChargePlay Clutch wireless charging coil outputs standard 5 watts. The ChargePlay Clutch power bank takes 6.5 hours to fully charge wirelessly. Depending on the battery capacity of the phone, you can expect to get almost double the battery life of the phone.
ChargePlay Clutch Mobile is, ultimately, a controller grip that gives you more control over your phone and charges your phone while you play. It is not a gamepad; hence there aren't any physical button controls. ChargePlay Clutch Mobile improves mobile gaming by making the experience more comfortable. This in turn makes playing longer games more comfortably, including role-playing video games such as Monster Hunter Stories.
The controller grips are not rubberized but made of textured hard plastic, which is not as grippy as rubber with sweaty hands. The HyperX ChargePlay Clutch can accommodate virtually any phone, although the larger the phone you use the further your thumbs will be from the center of the screen. One example of a long phone is the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, which measures 162mm long.
Reasonably sized phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S8 (149mm long) or Google Pixel (144mm long) are the ideal size, although the HyperX ChargePlay Clutch will accommodate any phone with a length between 129mm and 172mm. The phone also has to have a depth or 13mm or less.
The ChargePlay Clutch for Mobile controller grip weighs 130 grams without the power bank and 236 grams with the powerbank, which measures 78mm long, 64mm wide and 22mm thick. The controller grip, by itself, measures 17cm long, 10cm wide and 4cm thick.
The area where you rest the phone measures 6.5cm wide (top to bottom) and 8.4cm long (side to side). The charging coil area has a 50mm diameter. The construction is entirely made of hard plastic, including the cradle adjusting mechanism.
The included USB-A to USB-C charging cable is HyperX branded and measures 1.80 meters long. You can buy the HyperX ChargePlay Clutch Mobile on amazon. Check out other reviews: Pulsefire Raid mouseCloud Flight S headset and Cloud Buds Wireless and the new Cloud Revolver 7.1 headset.
