Redragon POLLUX K628 PRO Review 75% Form Factor Keyboard

Friday, July 08, 2022

A tale of many dragons! The POLLUX K628 PRO - is possibly Redragon's coolest mechanical keyboard to date!

The new POLLUX K628 PRO is a hot swappable mechanical keyboard that can be used via cable, 2.4Ghz wireless and Bluetooth. The POLLUX K628 PRO comes with 3 pin Outemu red switches, custom-themed stock keycaps with permanent legends and plastic top plate, helping to keep the weight low.

At just 511 grams, the POLLUX K628 PRO is super lightweight for a 75% form factor keyboard.
The POLLUX K628 PRO is entirely made of plastic and features a thick frame case, which is naturally angled. The top row of keys measure 3.5cm high and about 4.5cm high with the feet risers extended. The bottom row of keys is roughly 3cm high. The length and depth of the POLLUX K628 PRO keyboard is 35cm long and 10.5cm wide respectively.

The POLLUX K628 PRO has a standard bottom row layout with a 6.25u long (11.3mm) spacebar; hence you can easily interchange the stock keycaps with aftermarket ones. The POLLUX K628 PRO stock keycaps are the exact same ones you get with the CASTOR K631 PRO keyboard so, you can interchange them too.

The bottom of the case features anti0ski pads and single feet risers, which are covered with grippy rubber. The feet risers have a sturdy hinge to prevent the feet risers from wobbling. As well as the feet risers and anti-skid pads, the bottom of the POLLUX K628 PRO keyboard features a storage area for keeping the 2.4Ghz dongle securely for transportation. There is also a 3-way switch with an OFF setting for powering off bluetooth mode, which is extend standby mode.

Battery life (in 2.4Ghz mode) is similar to the CASTOR K631 PRO keyboard. Around 29 hours with RGB lights turned on and around 120 hours with RGBs turned off. The POLLUX K628 PRO takes 6.5 hours to recharge and you can turn off the backlight of the keyboard two ways: by cycling down the brightness level or using the FN+backspace command key. Battery life in bluetooth mode is approximately 10 hours.

If you are wondering whether to buy the original POLLUX K628 or POLLUX K628 PRO version, they are basically the same keyboard and similarly priced. Same key standard bottom row layout, same design ergonomics, same double shot ABS keycaps and performance.

The main differences are the POLLUX K628 PRO has an eye-catchy keycap color scheme (red, black and white) and wireless functionality (2.4Ghz and Bluetooth), making the POLLUX K628 PRO more versatile (better for work productivity) than the original POLLUX K628 PRO, which is a wired-only keyboard. The POLLUX K628 PRO is, essentially, portable so you can potentially use it with a tablet to do work (or gaming) offline, away from the desktop.

Some potential deal breakers facing the POLLUX K628 PRO include the clip-on storage area for the 2.4Ghz dongle, which works but wit's not likely to be as durable long-term as a magnetic attachment for securing the 2.4Ghz dongle like the one on the Redragon Horus K618 keyboard. The POLLUX K628 PRO doesn't have on-board macro recording/playback option like the CASTOR K631 PRO and only comes in 75% form factor; whereas the original POLLUX K628 keyboard is available in 65% and 75% form factors.
Great selling points for the POLLUX K628 PRO include recessed USB-C power/charging port, custom keyboard appeal, backlit stock keycaps, hot swap sockets, 3-pin/5-pin switch compatibility, arrow keys, numpad, factory pre-lubed dummy switch stabilizers for decreased rattling noise (less than original POLLUX K628 keyboard), FN command key to access all the functions you would normally find on a full size 100% keyboard. The POLLUX K628 keyboard has versatile RGB effects that include single solid color options and dynamic multi-colored RGB effects. The backlighting can be turned off from the keyboard and there is Bluetooth multipoint connectivity for up to 3 separate devices. To access custom light mode, you will need to download Redragon's software, which allows you to change the color of the swtiches to any color you want.

You can buy the POLLUX K628 PRO from Redragon's website and amazon. Inside the box, you will find a quick start guide, 8 spare switches, metal keycap puller, metal switch puller and 1.2 meter long detachable rubber cable. Check out the reviews of Elf Pro K649 transparent keyboard, Garen K656 Pro.
