JLAB Epic Air Sport ANC 2nd Gen Review Ear Hook Earbuds

Wednesday, February 01, 2023

Never lose your earbuds again with JLab's new Epic Air Sport ANC 2nd Gen earbuds, featuring an ear hook design - perfect for active lifestyles!

Whether window cleaning or fitness, the Epic Air Sport ANC 2nd Gen earbuds offer a superb secure fit, letting you get on with your day without worrying about the earbuds falling off your ears. The charging case supports Qi wireless charging and integrates the same built-in charging cable design found on the JBuds Air Pro and Go Air charging cases. The built-in charging cable is made of thick rubber (4cm long) and features a low profile USB-A connector.

The Epic Air Sport ANC 2nd Gen charging cable is a neat design and very convenient, although surprising no other earbud manufacturer has copied the design, which does have some drawbacks. For example, the charging cable is not removable, which is a problem should it break and, there is also no physical charging port. Fortunately, the Epic Air Sport ANC 2nd Gen charging case supports wireless charging.

Due to the ear hook design, the Epic Air Sport ANC 2nd Gen aren't as compact or comfy to wear for long periods as the JBuds Air Pro and Go Air. The Epic Air Sport ANC 2nd Gen earbuds do come with touch sensitive buttons for controlling a maximum of 4 functions per earbud via gestures (single tap, double tap, long tap and triple tap).

Default controls include volume, track skipping, voice assistant, EQ mode, ANC/transparency mode and calls (answer/end/reject) but, you can customize these functions via the  Jlab Sound app. From the mobile app, you can also adjust the level of ANC and external ambient sound and access 3 EQ preset sounds plus a custom mode to create your own sound signature via a 10-band equalizer slider.

The Epic Air Sport ANC 2nd Gen charging case is bulky and heavy but well made with a strong hinge lid and raised plastic engraving of Jlab. The charging case has a large magnetized docking area for easy removal of the earbuds. The Epic Air Sport ANC 2nd Gen earbuds touch control area has a raised Jlab engraving too, which makes it the touch panel tactile and grippy.

The earbud shell is plastic, while the ear hook is made of flexible rubber (not bendable). Both the earbuds and charging case have physical leds for battery status. The case leds are also designed to feedback battery level of each earbud without having to open the case and check the earbuds.

Dimensions of the Epic Air Sport ANC 2nd Gen case are 8.5cm long x 6.5cm wide x 3.5cm high. Each earbud weighs 10 grams, while the case weighs 145 grams.Battery performance is impressive - about 14 hours per earbud with ANC turned off and 10 hours with ANC turned on. The case can hold 50 hours. The Epic Air Sport ANC 2nd Gen charging time is 3 hours (earbuds) and 3.5 hours for the case with the cable. You can also charge the case with a fast wireless charger in under 2 hours.

Pairing is easy but no automatic bluetooth pairing; hence, you can't connect the earbuds whilst in the charging case. That said, you can switch between earbuds for mono mode with only 2 second re-connection delay. The mic quality is natural sounding and has good amplification, although the mic noise cancellation isn't best for taking important calls in a noisy environment like the gym or road.
